Quiz whiz raises more than £15,000 to help breast cancer sufferers

January 18 2013

As a  Breast cancer survivor said she was "over the moon" after smashing her £15,000 fund-raising target.
Christine Cotterill set herself a goal to raise the money for the Derby Breast Cancer Support Group by the end of 2012.

Not only has she beaten this figure, she now also wants to boost her efforts to raise £20,000.

Mrs Cotterill said: "I'm over the moon. I'm thrilled to say I've smashed through my target taking my overall fund-raising total to an incredible £15,325.37."

Mrs Cotterill, 67, of Ednaston, Ashbourne, began fund-raising in January 1997.

She said: "It started off with me doing table-top sales. People would give me their unwanted items and I used to go to church hall sales, as well as putting donated items on eBay and books on Amazon."

She has also raised money by compiling Christmas quizzes, which she began in 2000 after being appointed secretary of Derby Breast Cancer Support Group.
"The first time I did it there were only 18 questions and I circulated them among friends," she said.
"Last Christmas I sold 617 quiz sheets, which is my best ever year.  "Around 500 people returned their sheets. I felt  like a school teacher marking them!  "I was surprised at how many people helped me, what with the recession and the postal charge.  "People knew I wanted to reach my target so they have gone the extra mile this year."

A cheque was presented to Derby Breast Cancer Support Group, which offers counselling, information and befriending to people with breast cancer, as well as their families and friends.
Mrs Cotterill, who battled breast cancer more than 10 years ago, said the money would go towards hospital equipment.
She said: "The support group covers a wide area including Alfreton, Etwall, Ilkeston and Belper.
"The money is available for the Royal Derby Hospital or local hospitals to use for new specialist equipment.
"It's all for a very good cause."
Despite reaching her target amount, Mrs Cotterill said she would not stop.  She said: "I enjoy doing the quizzes too much to give it up. It won't stop here."

January 18 2009

I AM the secretary of the Derby Breast Cancer Support Group and for several years now I have been raising funds for it.
At the end of December, the figure raised reached £10,141. I am over the moon to have broken through the £10K target. This has been raised through selling Christmas quiz sheets, table-top sales, selling items on E-bay and Amazon and holding Christmas raffles.
I have a small army of dedicated people who have helped me over the years.
Through your newspaper I would like to thank everyone who has helped.
From our support group's other fundraising (such as fashion shows) and donations received from the public we have been able to donate £54,500 to our two local hospitals for equipment for breast cancer patients.
